NJROTC Ranks

The ranks of the JROTC are based on those of the US Navy.
(Note: all abbreviations are preceded by C/ , meaning Cadet)

They start with the basic levels of seaman:,

  • Seaman Recruit (SR)
  • Seaman Apprentice (SA), and
  • Seaman (SN).

    Next come the petty officer ranks, with:

  • Petty Officer 3rd Class (PO3)
  • Petty Officer 2nd Class (PO2)
  • Petty Officer 1st Class (PO1), and
  • Chief Petty Officer.
    Some units have the ranks of Senior Chief Petty Officer, and even Master Chief Petty Officer; but our unit does not.

    Then the Officer ranks begin. These are:

  • Ensign (ES)
  • Lieutenant [junior grade] (Lt. jg)
  • Lieutenant (LT), and
  • Lieutenant Commander (LCDR).
    This last is the highest rank in our company. In larger units, there is the possibility of reaching the rank of Commander (CDR), but our company is not large enough.
